Happy Holidays and VeeamON Virtual!

Source: Veeam

If you’re in the business of data management, chances are, you already know that Veeam® holds two major events each year. VeeamON is our premier conference for Intelligent Data Management, which will be held in Miami in 2019. It’s an amazing event where professionals from every side of the industry join together to discuss the future of data. We also have an online VeeamON Virtual event that has all the same perks as the real-life one, but with the luxury of enjoying it with a favorite drink at your own leisure.

This year’s VeeamON Virtual was held on Dec. 5, and we couldn’t be happier with the results! We’re so glad that our efforts matched your high expectations for the event.

Day of the event

Nothing gives us more drive to continue making VeeamON Virtual bigger and better in the coming years than the exponential growth in not just the number of attendees, but in your interaction with us.

We’ve had a variety of fully interactive booths for Veeam and our Alliance partners that featured onsite representatives, an expert lounge, live chats, a resource library and online games. We also had some amazing sponsorship from our beloved partners NetApp, Cisco, Nutanix, Quantum, Pure Storage, N2WS, Wasabi and OffsiteDataSync. In addition, 26 Veeam Vanguards, VUG (Veeam User Group) champions and trusted bloggers contributed as media partners for the event, actively engaging in our expert lounge where community members and customers talked about the latest technology news and Veeam.

Overall, 21,757 people from all around the world registered for VeeamON Virtual and 5,339 people attended the online event, so we want to thank all of you who came along, listened, asked questions and took notes of beards missing.

At the core, VeeamON Virtual was featuring video sessions by Veeam speakers, Alliance speakers and external experts in English, French, Italian and German simultaneously!

Looking at the attendance rate, these three sessions were the most popular (and understandably so):

  • “Veeam predictions for 2019” presented by David Grant and Dave Russell
  • “Best practices of Veeam Backup & Replication™ 2018” presented by Paul Szelesi
  • NEW Veeam Availability Suite™ 9.5 Update 4” presented by Michael Cade

That said, these popular sessions were just the tip of the iceberg, as there were three overarching tracks:

  • The business track explored the direction of the industry with predictions and multi-cloud challenges for enterprises, made complete with the help of partner sessions from Cisco and NetApp.
  • The cloud track was full of exciting updates concerning both existing and new technologies that bring the cloud even closer. Topics included: how to protect your AWS with Veeam’s latest joint solution with N2WS, information about hosted off-host backups for cloud providers with Veeam Cloud Connect, deep dives into Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 v2 and details on how Veeam delivers Hyper-Availability with Nutanix’s AHV Snapshots.
  • The technical track discussed automated testing with Veeam Availability Orchestrator, joint protection for hybrid environments with Quantum, how you can achieve rapid restores with joint Pure Storage solutions and, of course, sessions that covered best practices for using Veeam Backup & Replication™ 2018 and the upcoming Update 4.

By the way, don’t miss our live announcement covering the latest features included in NEW Veeam Availability Suite™ 9.5 Update 4 on Jan. 22. This live event will cover what’s new in Veeam Availability Suite™ and discuss benefits such as cost savings, cloud flexibility, security, compliance and more!

Watch on-demand

If you feel like you’ve missed anything from VeeamON Virtual, don’t! We have everything from the event recorded and available just for you to watch at any time. If you missed the event completely, you can still register to receive your personal virtual ticket to access these on-demand recordings. Those of you who have joined us at the day of the event but still would like access these archives, you can use your original virtual ticket link to get to all the recorded sessions.

Why it’s so easy to get started with Veeam

Source: Veeam

When I first started working with Veeam Software before becoming a Veeam Vanguard and joining the Veeam Product Strategy Team, one of the things that was so appealing was that it was so easy to get started with and use.

Before I knew it, I was backing up and restoring virtual machines with ease. Now, I want to take a closer look at what makes Veeam products so easy to use and get started with.

Veeam just works

Like many people who love technology out there, I tend to leap before I look. Many times, beyond installation requirements I will not actually ready any how-to-get-started guides if I am working in a lab. Has this come back and bitten me at times? Sure it has, but with Veeam, it has not.

This goes beyond Veeam’s flagship product, Veeam Backup & Replication and extends to things like Veeam ONE, Veeam Availability Orchestrator, and extends to advanced features like storage integration. I haven’t met a Veeam product I found difficult to install.

Top-notch product documentation

After installing Veeam Backup & Replication and backing up and restoring a couple of virtual machines, I wondered what else I was missing. As it turns out, I was missing quite a lot! The good news is that Veeam product documentation is top notch.

When I was getting started with Veeam, I primarily worked with Veeam Backup & Replication for VMware vSphere. There were two documents I read from back to front:

Here is why these two documents are so useful.

The Veeam Backup & Replication Evaluator’s Guide for VMware vSphere (there is also one for Hyper-V if you prefer that hypervisor) covers key getting-started information like system requirements, among other things. It also walks you through the complete setup of Veeam Backup & Replication, and more importantly, it walks you through the process of performing your first backups and restores.

Beyond simply restoring a full VM, which as we know is not always required, the Evaluator’s Guide shows you how to restore:

  • Microsoft SQL databases
  • Guest OS files
  • VM virtual disks
  • VM files (VMDKs, VMXs, etc.)

Once you are comfortable with the basics of Veeam Backup & Replication, the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide has the full details of all the great things Veeam can do.

Some of my favorite things beyond the basics of Veeam Backup & Replication are:

The Veeam community

One of the greatest part of Veeam products is the community surrounding it. The Veeam community is huge, and there are a couple of ways to start interacting. First of all is the Veeam Community Forums, which is your one-stop shop on the web for interreacting with other Veeam users, as well as some great technology experts that work at Veeam. You can sign up for free for the Veeam Community Forums right here.

Next, we have the Veeam Vanguards. They are a great group of Veeam enthusiasts and IT pros who share their knowledge not only on the Veeam Community Forums, but on Twitter and on their blogs. Simply search for the #VeeamVanguard hashtag on Twitter to get started interacting with these great folks.

It could not be easier to get started using Veeam products. Veeam offers a free 30-day trial of many of their products, including the flagship Veeam Availability Suite, which includes Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam ONE. You can download the free trial here.

If you are an IT pro, you can also get a completely free NFR license for Veeam Availability Suite. Be sure to fill out the request form here, and get started with Veeam in your lab.
