Universal support, enabling real world applications

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) was incorporated into the Bluetooth 4.0 specification in 2010 and experienced rapid uptake, including all the major operating systems, many of the smartphones and tablets we use today, plus a new breed of devices like fitness bands and simple RF tags. BLE excels at sharing small packets of data, referred to as attributes, over a low energy link, and is frequently used for health monitoring, proximity detection, asset tracking, and in-store navigation.

Dedicated, efficient hardware with simple management

The MR32 and MR72 access points contain an integral Bluetooth radio and dedicated antenna, providing superior coverage and convenience to support these applications. In other words, no other hardware is required, it’s all built-in.

BLE, as its name suggests, is designed to sip power, enabling some dedicated beacons to run for years on a single battery, opening up new practical applications at low cost. Bluetooth is also an efficient standard when it comes to radio interference. Operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, it uses frequency hopping technology to circumvent interference problems often seen in this band. Cell sizes can be tuned to the application requirement, with potential range comparable to 2.4 GHz WiFi, even taking into account the low power requirements of the standard.

Everything is managed through the Meraki dashboard, with a monitor view for identifying Bluetooth devices, their connectivity history, and tagging for simple organization and search.

Putting Beacons to work

The MR32 and MR72 APs enable customers to begin developing practical applications for BLE devices. These can be broadly categorized into ‘push’ applications, where the AP informs an aware device that it is in a certain location, or ‘pull’ applications, where the AP listens for beacons and uses this information to assist with asset tracking and control through the dashboard. Location analytics based on BLE generally work on an opt-in basis, with the consumer enticed via an app which leverages location for mutual benefit.

Virtualization and Cooling a Higher Density Server Room

Virtualization can result in increased rack density, but it also introduces issues that go beyond high density alone and which must be considered in power and cooling systems supporting a virtualized environment

What’s different now?

According to a recent IDC study among IT enterprise data center managers, “Virtualization continues its move into enterprise datacenters. Only a small percentage of respondents signaled they have no plans to deploy virtualization.” Virtualization is bringing higher and higher processor utilization to the data center, increasing the business importance and criticality of each physical server, which makes effective power and cooling even more vital in safeguarding availability. The need for capacity management is greatest when there is change; changing server populations, varying power density, load migration both over time and in physical location – and the steady advance of new technologies and increasing pressure to conserve energy. The abrupt, sometimes extreme, reduction in IT load that accompanies virtualization presents an opportunity for cost reduction in power and cooling systems that is often missed.

The Schneider Electric Solution

Effective deployment of virtualization emphasizes the need for an integrated capacity management solution with real-time visibility to the power, cooling and physical space capacities at the rack and server level, to ensure efficient use of resources and to warn of scarce or unusable ones. Schneider Electric’s Operations Capacity provides automated intelligence and modeling of the physical infrastructure capacities, suggests the best place for adding equipment, as well as simulates the effect of proposed changes and recognizes conditions in time for corrective action to be taken. With this intelligence, virtualization can fulfill its potential for efficiency and business value.

Benefits of Desktop Virtualization

Benefits of desktop virtualization

Business Continuity regarding Productivity

When pushing over into the VDI or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure your local hardware requirements become almost non-existent and inexpensive.  The thought of a hardware failure would feel the same as having a pen run out of ink.  It’s inconvenient but you grab another one and keep working.  The user would be able to walk to another workstation, desktop, laptop, or tablet log in and continue where they left off.  The ROI could be calculated by removing those 4-hour support contracts that are rarely closed within 8-hours and productivity lost due to endpoint hardware.  Remove the ever looming thought of losing all of your local data, the thought of “did I back up that file I’ve been working on all week,” or “if  I have a hardware failure the loss of a day of productivity.”  Based our own personal experience, on average a minor Business PC hardware issue causes about 9 hours of lost productivity.  With new products having a 2% failure rate within the first year and increasing as the hardware ages and dust accumulates the cost of lost productivity can enumerate quickly no matter the business size.  Most companies don’t have hardware components lying around to fix or replace those workstations, not only because it can be costly, but also because they are most likely paying for support contracts that cover hardware failures.

Hardware Onsite-Inhouse, at the Data Center, or Hosted-in the cloud?

This choice depends on the size of the company, whether you have a Server Room, network infrastructure, bandwidth, and IT staff to keep the Compute and Storage Servers in house.  Most companies are moving to rack rental Data Centers, like BlueBridge Networks, that already have redundant power legs, UPS, tons of scalable bandwidth, and Fort Knox type security (ID badge, Driver’s License, and Fingerprint required for entry).  The last choice is finding a company that is already in a Data Center or has their own Data Center where they will host your VDI solution and charge you based on user count, data, or CPU usage.  The choice is up to you and 7 Server Solutions & RJ Technologies can walk you through those choices.

Everything is Scalable Now!

What’s nice about technology in 2015 is it’s all scalable.  From your Servers & Storage to Network Hardware to Battery Backup, all IT infrastructure products can be purchased as a chassis and can be scaled up and down depending on the end user’s needs.

Servers & Storage – Blade Chassis, like the Dell M1000E, can populate eight or more servers in a 4u rackspace.  This allows for a dense scalable computing solution.  Each server is equipped with Dual Intel Xeon E2500 Series Processors and up to 2tb of memory.  Whether you start with four servers or fill the chassis the real-estate savings are enormous.  Storage units, like the Qnap TS-EC2480U-RP offer up to 912TB of raw capacity spanded over eight expansion enclosures. These storage units with the help of some Enteprise SSD cache drives, offer 419,000 Read IOPS and 359,000 Write IOPS.

Network – Cisco Catalyst, Dell C-Series both offer scalable Core and Campus switch solutions.  These units allow for customized solutions by purchasing modules or blades depending on what type of connections are required.  We recommend 10GE or 40gb Fiber for your compute servers.

UPS/Battery Backup – APC Symmetra series allows for a customer to purchase a unit and at any time upgrade to double the power capacity.  So a customer that only needs 8kva today and is expecting to expand their business and add another set of Blade servers can upgrade to 16kva when required.

Software – The VWware Horizon VDI suites are yearly subscriptions allowing companies to scale up or down year to year depending on their employee or user count.  Microsoft 365 and Adobe Cloud allows for both monthly or yearly subscriptions which allows companies to purchase specific suites for their users.  While some may use Frontpage & Access others only need Outlook and Excel, and if those who don’t currently use Frontpage can change their subscription to the correct software edition and back down later on.  This is the same for the Adobe Creative Cloud products.
